Talking about AI with young children
You don't need to be a tech expert. You just need a warm story and a few simple ideas to start the conversation.
Why talk about AI now?
Young children already meet AI — in voice assistants, games, and the helpers built into everyday apps. Starting early, gently, helps kids build healthy habits before those tools become a bigger part of their lives.
Pip & Glitch gives families language for the conversation and introduces one simple rule kids can carry with them: helpers can help, but the thinking is yours.
Simple family rules
Four small ideas, easy enough for a four-year-old to remember.
AI can help.
Helpers can answer questions and give ideas — that's a good thing.
You still do the thinking.
Try first, use your own ideas, and decide what makes sense to you.
Keep private things private.
Don't share private information with apps or strangers.
Ask a trusted grown-up.
When something feels confusing or tricky, ask someone you trust.
Questions to talk through after reading
- →What did Liam do when his helper went quiet?
- →Can you think of a time you figured something out all by yourself?
- →What's something a helper is good at? What's something only you can do?
- →Who is a grown-up you can ask when something feels tricky?

Ken Mendoza
Author & creator, Pip & GlitchPip & Glitch began with a simple question: how do you talk to a four-year-old about AI — without fear, hype, or a lecture? The answer turned out to be the oldest one there is: a story.
This series is built on a parent-guided approach to early AI literacy. Rather than handing kids another screen, it brings families together over a printed book and a box of crayons — with one clear idea at its heart: AI can help, but you do the thinking.
Our goal is to help start a conversation and give parents language for it — introducing a simple rule children can grow up with.
A note on claims
Pip & Glitch is a story designed to support early AI literacy and family conversation. We don't make claims about measurable educational outcomes — we simply offer a warm, honest starting point.
